We are the students of Mr. Saldivar’s American Literature class at Jones College Prep and we are researching the equity in Chicago Public Schools’ special education programs. This project came to be as we studied the concepts of transcendentalism, self reliance, individualism and the relationship between knowledge and public institutions. We explored these topics by reading Always Running by Luis Rodriguez where he becomes a transcendentalist by overcoming obstacles such as public education. We posed the question ‘What is equity in education?’ this led to discussions and research about the topic which leaves us with this analysis on special education programs.
Equity is the ability for every individual to get the resources they need.
